QR Code Best Practices for Print and Screen
The design and testing rules that keep QR codes scannable: contrast, size, quiet zone, error correction and placement.

A QR code only delivers value if it scans on the first try. These field-tested practices keep your codes reliable across print and screen.
Contrast and color
Use a dark foreground on a light background and keep contrast high. Scanners read the pattern by brightness difference, so a dark code on white is safest. If you use brand colors, keep the code clearly darker than its background, and avoid light-on-dark unless you have tested it thoroughly.
Size and distance
A common rule of thumb is that a code should be at least one-tenth as wide as the distance it will be scanned from. A code on a handheld flyer can be small; one on a billboard must be large. When in doubt, go bigger.
Protect the quiet zone
Leave a clear margin of at least four modules around the code. Do not let text, images or the edge of a page crowd it. Cropped quiet zones are a leading cause of failed scans.
Logos and error correction
If you add a logo, keep it small — under about a quarter of the code — and raise error correction to Q or H. Always re-test after adding any graphic element.
Placement and call to action
- Place codes where a phone can physically reach them — not too high on a wall or behind glass with glare.
- Tell people what they will get: “Scan to see the menu,” “Scan to connect to WiFi.”
- Never put a scannable code where it will be viewed only on the same screen doing the scanning.
Finally, test on multiple devices in real conditions before mass production. It is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
