Barcodes and QR codes both turn printed patterns into data a machine can read, but they were built for different jobs. A barcode is a fast, cheap way to look up one item at a checkout or in a warehouse. A QR code is a richer link between something physical and something digital — a website, a WiFi network, a payment. How each one stores data
A traditional retail barcode is one-dimensional: it encodes numbers in the widths and spacing of vertical bars, read left to right. A QR code is two-dimensional, storing data in a grid of squares both horizontally and vertically. When to use a QR code
