About the Hash Generator

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of your input. This tool computes SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes from any text as you type, using the browser’s built-in Web Crypto API.

Hashes are useful for checksums, verifying data integrity and building simple fingerprints. Everything is computed on your device.

Each algorithm always returns the same fixed-length hex string no matter how long the input is: SHA-1 is 40 characters, SHA-256 is 64, SHA-384 is 96 and SHA-512 is 128. You type once and all four appear together, so you can copy whichever one a checksum or system expects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is MD5 not included?

MD5 is cryptographically broken and unsafe for security use, so this tool provides SHA-256 and stronger instead.

Can I reverse a hash?

No. Hashing is one-way by design — you cannot recover the original text from a hash.

Is SHA-1 safe to use?

SHA-1 is fine for non-security checksums, but it is considered weak against deliberate collision attacks. Do not use it for digital signatures, certificates or password storage — prefer SHA-256 or stronger for anything security-related.

Can I hash a file?

No. This tool hashes the text you type or paste, not uploaded files. For a file checksum, use a built-in system tool such as certutil on Windows or shasum on macOS and Linux.
